Hi All,

Welcome back to another episode of brand new tracks – nearly 9 months since the last!  I say brand new, this playlist has been accumulated over the entirety of that window so that isn’t a strictly accurate description but hey ho – it’s all good stuff anyway!

Whilst it is far from a definitive ‘best of the last 9 months’, episode 51 does at least go some way to fulfilling that criteria.  From Giuseppe Ottaviani and Aly & Fila’s emotionally heart-bursting ‘Brilliant People’ to The Thrillseekers’ timeless sounding ‘When All Else Fails’, we have tracks released across the full time spectrum and they’re all spectacular.  No fillers here!

As ever lovingly and painstakingly handpicked by yours truly, I hope the tracks in episode 51 strike a chord and make you feel just that little bit happier about life – even if you’re loving it already!  That is, after all, the true purpose of this show and of music in general in my opinion.

Well…it’s here.  Room 1ne Sessions…episode 50!!

It’s been 7 years in the making and, as I’m sure you can imagine, selecting just 52 tracks from just under 1000 is a tough ask, hence the time it’s taken me to get this done.   I hope it’s worth the wait!

Thanks so much to everyone who has listened over the last 7 years.  It’s always such a thrill to know that this show is having the desired effect in spreading the music I love to people who may not thought they liked it or even knew it existed.  There are of course those that love it like me and sharing my favourite tracks of the moment with them in the form of what I hope is a nicely crafted mix is also equally enjoyable.  In short, it’s almost altruistic but then what in life truly is?

You’ll know how I like to include a variety of stuff in every show but I think this ‘best of’ episode will show that uplifting, uptempo trance is still where the true joy is to be found in this scene.  There is so much genuine bullshit around with producers trying to bridge the gap to house where the popularity undoubtedly rests these days and I have to say seeing house take the place of RnB and garage in the UK mainstream is refreshing.  However, when this shift filters down to producers I’ve loved completely turning their back on what they loved once upon a time to make music that ‘ticks the boxes’ it’s a real shame.

I know it’s a matter of personal taste though and thankfully there are still plenty of great and consistent producers out there that still appeal to mine!  If you’re not sure who they are, check the following tracklist.   Room 1ne will continue as long as there continues to be great dance music (and as long as I have time) so long may it continue!

Hi again,

I’m back again, as promised, with the sequel to episode 49a and what a 2 hour trance belter it is too.  I often find the normal format shows are weighted towards trance, despite the fact I sometimes (mistakenly) feel my tastes are moving more towards house music, and there’s further evidence here trance is still the driving force behind these shows.

Look out for some big vocals in this episode, not least the Mark Burton, Sunlounger & Zara Taylor bootleg later on in the show which I only came across whilst downloading tracks on the morning of putting the mix together.  It’s something Armin put together for his shows recently and I love it when a good bootleg gets a release!  A rare and wonderful thing.

Episode 50 will be something special as it’s a bit of a landmark.  There’ll be some more info on this in the coming weeks Twitter and Facebook so keep an eye out.

Hello All,

Welcome back to Room 1ne for another session.  Since the collaborative episode 48, I’ve taken a bit of a break and, during the hiatus, have been considering how best to approach this episode.  Inevitably, with a couple of months or so to listen to new music, there was more of a chance to hear tracks that met the R1S criteria and, interestingly, an awful lot of these were house music, thanks in no small part to Joachim Garraud’s ‘Zemixx’ podcast and a new find, Hardwell’s ‘On Air’ podcast.  Thus, I decided it had to be a two part episode.

May I present to you, 55 minutes of BIG HOUSE MUSIC.  I can’t stand fluffy house and a lot of the stuff that’s played even by the better house DJs these days lacks real punch in the drop but these tracks definitely do not.  This is not a mix for the faint-hearted.  There’s no build up here, no fillers, no nonsense – just big ‘COME ON’-style drops punctuated with some nice vocals that can be belted out with the window down in the car.

Episode 49b will be along in all its up-tempo glory in a few days but, for the meantime, get the summer vibe with this monster mix.

Hello All,

Welcome to a very special episode of Room 1ne Sessions.  Before I go on, I’m having some trouble with uploading this episode in the usual way at the moment but you can listen to and download the show hassle free through SoundCloud by clicking the link at the top.

So, yes, 48 is the new 50 it seems as I have put together a milestone episode with my good friend, Mr Phil-Harmonic Podcast himself, Phil Dickinson.  Welcome, Sir, to the historic Room 1ne and may I say what a privilege it is to be a part of this harmony and share your hallowed airwaves as well.

I don’t blog like Phil.  I tried it once and felt a bit sleepy.  Suffices to say though that this man blogs for the both of us and more!  As I explain in the show, Phil has been blogging about EDM for many years now, dating back to well before the inauguration of The Phil-Harmonic Podcast, and ‘he knows his shit’ as they say.  Where I am a lazy enthusiast with a penchant for the simple, Phil is a musical activist, burning through .html as if it were a pile of bras in order to get his message to the world.  As far as I can tell from knowing the man and his blog as I do, his message is simple – EDM IS AWESOME.  LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT IT.  I, for one, am all ears.

But enough of this rambly nonsense.  Phil and I have reached episode 48 of our respective podcasts at the same time and decided to celebrate this mutual milestone with a collaboration in which both of us showcase not just the tracks we love but the styles and the journeys we love to portray.  It helps that we have pretty similar tastes for the most part but perhaps where you’ll notice some difference in this 3 hour + montage, in which Phil has taken first watch, is the way TPHP ebbs and flows where Room 1ne builds to a final crescendo.  Phil has always been a ‘half and half’ kinda guy – first half down-tempo with the second half ramped up.  Perhaps it’s the slightly shorter than normal nature of his episode 48 that means this mould has been slightly broken but, regardless, I’ve always felt Phil keeps things together very neatly through his mixes, interchanging between styles with the minimum of fuss.  You’ll hear a housey bassline lead into a trancey riff and think little of it.  It’s a skill make no mistake but also a fundamental difference between our two shows as Room 1ne explores a style then leaves it behind in search of more beats per minute. The bottom line is, despite the fact we’d both say this episode seems to have been jinxed as we’ve struggled to get it from the turntables to the interwebs to your ears, we’re thrilled with the result of this unique opportunity to showcase our respective shows to the other’s regular audience and hope you all are too.

Hello my dear, dear friends,

Many apologies for the late arrival of this episode.  However, by way of recompense, it’s a 30 track smorgasbord this time round to make up for it so I hope you’re all hungry!

There appears to be a very marked first and second half to this episode, certainly more so than usual, particularly as a result of the Arnej (by the way he is of Bosnian origin – not north American as I mentioned in the show – obviously) influence I’ve been under these past few weeks.  LOVE his deep, dark and pounding take on the trance scene and (this is something I love doing by the way) the way he pitches up his tracks to boost the energy (see episode 15 of the Arnej Podcast for evidence) to devastating effect.  Tracks 8-13 certainly follow this theme and, on another day, would have made for a nice finale of the first portion of the mix.  However, I like the ability that style gives me to build the tempo and energy towards the more traditional trance sound and like to think, were I to play a set in a club of completely my own preference, this whole mix would be a pretty decent harbinger of what to expect.  I’ve covered all my favourite bases!

There are some huge tracks on display in ep 45 so something for you guys to really get your teeth into.  This episode’s influences come from, along with the usual suspects like ASOT and Beatport, The Arnej Podcast, Bjorn Akesson’s ‘Threshold’ podcast and the Enhanced Sessions podcast as well as new albums from Solarstone and Eric Prydz.  I recommend you check those out if you haven’t already.

Hello all Room 1ne-ers and welcome back to another installment of the web’s finest representation of the music Ben Collier likes!  This episode packs one hell of a punch so be ready for some up-tempo melodies and toughness.

It was a very difficult decision to pick a track of the month for February’s showcase but I think I’m happy with my choice.  Either way, it had to be given to one of the many great vocals on display in this 2 hours or so of music.

And, indeed, timing is a big thing this month what with the length of the show being strictly governed by the amount of time I predicted it would take me to run 16 miles this morning so I could listen back to the show whilst pounding the tarmac.  I predicted 2 hours 10 but the show came out a few minutes under.  However, having completed the race (in 2 hours 9!), I can safely say it did one hell of a job!  Daniel Sanchez & Sinc’s take on the classic vocals of Nina Simone (New Day) was perfect for the early stages with the morning sun in my eyes and Indecent Noise’s new ‘Mental Asylum’ EP was the perfect spur to push me through the pain late on.

I don’t suggest you all listen to this whilst running 16 miles, of course, but this episode is packed with some great feel-good grooves, aurally arresting vocals, smile-inducing melodies and dark techy punches to the face to suit all tastes and take you on a nice little musical journey.

Hello All,

It’s back!  Room 1ne Sessions is back for 2012 and in stereo sound!

This episode showcases the very best of the music that Room 1ne loves from the months of December ’11 and January ’12.  It’s hard enough selecting tracks over the course of a single month never mind two so this has been one hell of an exercise in ruthless tracklist selection but it always makes for a good episode when you whittle and whittle until all that’s left is tracks that just couldn’t be left out!  I’ve also avoided adding even more tracks into the equation by not scouring Beatport and the other online record stores for this episode, thus, the vibe over these 26 tracks is more one of big and recognisable sounds as showcased in the variety of podcasts and radio shows to which I’ve listened since before Christmas.  Essentially, prepare yourself for some EDM bombs!

Keep an ear out for the Mat Zo montage early on in the episode.  Never have I enjoyed so many tracks by an artist in such a short space of time and my hat has to go off to a man who, I’ll admit, I’ve sat on the fence with sometimes.  Sean Tyas is back with a bang with two massive vocal tracks, including ‘Believe’ featuring the vocals of David Berkeley of ‘Fire Sign’ fame (my favourite track of last year).  Vast Vision have done it AGAIN with their track, ‘Black Shores’, which, having been released on the first Future Sounds of Egypt compilation last year (the second of which look great and is out now by the way!), has finally seen a release.  There’s a great Bjorn Akesson remix as well but this original mix is uniquely brilliant and, when I heard it in the mix, I knew I’d chosen the right version.  Klauss Goulart, arguably my favourite producer of the last year, comes up with a great tech trance remix of Solarstone and Orkidea’s classic ‘Slowmotion’ and the Room 1ne Classic for this month is Above & Beyond at their brilliant, early noughties best.

It’s here!  The dream has been realised!  My dream that is, of sorting out this f***ing recording debacle which has blighted the completion of the Room 1ne Sessions 2011 Year Mix.

I apologise to everyone who’s been expecting this over the last couple of weeks but am pleased to finally reveal this particular show’s top 75 tracks of 2011 and release 6 and a half hours of continuous Room 1ne memories from last year.  This episode has been broken down into 2 parts for no other reason than the problems that have delayed this edition relate to trying to export the file as one single .wav file.  Ideally I’d have liked it to be one full show but if you have the two mp3s side by side on your mp3 player you’ll probably not even notice anything!

Anyway, I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who listened last year and to everyone who voted for their favourite tracks, both each month for the ‘People’s Choice’ and for this Year Mix.  I really hope it’s representative of your respective years following EDM (and Room 1ne in particular of course) and hope this keeps you all motivated in your individual bids for physical, emotional, social, economic, political or cultural redemption as we strive to make a few much needed changes in the early days of another new year.

It’s been a very good November!  It began with Dan and Laura’s brilliant wedding weekend in Dublin, which included the groom and I singing a mashup of Sureal – You Take My Breath Away over Calvin Harris & Rhianna (try it – it works!) and pestering the DJ, without success I should add, with questions like ‘Do you have any dubstep?’  I became the person I hate the most

The other main highlight was seeing Phil (of The Phil-Harmonic Podcast fame) and the guys for a long awaited Ministry session.  It was so good to go again after a good, cynicism-cleansing break and we were treated to a great show from W&W (who smashed it early doors and got the crowd going with a mixture of electro house, chunky prog trance and their very own brand of electro trance), Full Tilt (aka Timmy & Tommy – see a video here of them making my night by dropping one of my tunes of the year), John O’Callaghan (who is simply a must-see and lit up the place with this amazing 4 track mash up) and Orjan Nilsen (one of the producers of 2011 who, despite looking like a butch lesbian, is great value and energy behind the decks as well).  You’ll spot tracks by 3/4 of these guys in Episode 40 and it would have been more if there was any way at all I could have got my hands on the O’Callaghan bootleg!

But, most importantly, November has also seen the last incarnation of Room 1ne Sessions.  Whether it be a good last few weeks for EDM, more time taken in researching tracks by yours truly or a mixture of the two, I can safely say Episode 40 of Room 1ne Sessions has been one of the most time-consuming to put together, not just in the 2 hours and 40 minutes of recording time but in the 10+ hours of web scouring and playlist whittling that’s taken place as well.  As you know, sometimes I like to cut an episode into 2 parts and this would possibly have made sense with a 29 track playlist as a long mix can be a bit much to listen through to but this time the tracks didn’t really facilitate that and, quite frankly, it’s great fun putting together a long, largely club-style set such as this.  There’s a whole host of good tracks and I look forward to receiving your votes for your favourite track.

NB, the next People’s Choice track will be featured in Episode 42 in January as next month will be the Room 1ne 2011 Year Mix.  I’d like to take this opportunity to offer anyone and everyone the chance to vote for their favourite Room 1ne track of 2011 (Episodes 31 – 40).  You can tweet your suggestions to @KemptonHerald or leave your requests on the Facebook page and I’ll endeavour to include them all in the show which will be released just before Christmas and in time for all your NYE parties!

Well a very firm morning to you all,

Firstly, apologies for the delay in getting this together.  It really should be worth the wait though.  I got very excited yesterday morning when I realised I had a Room 1ne to look forward to in the afternoon!

In keeping with the fact that it’s delayed in it’s release, I thought I’d kick of Episode 39 a little more uptempo than sometimes and crack straight on with the energy.  I really like pitching up good, driving prog or house as it just gives it so much more of ‘get up and go’ factor.  Sometimes you can listen to a couple of tracks, certainly in a mix that progresses (like Room 1ne), and then find yourself thinking, “OK, let’s get on with it now, please.”  Hopefully there will be little to promote that feeling this time out!

I kicked off this episode with a cracking bit of, well, I suppose electronic infused rock (correct me if you have a better description!) from Apparat, aka Sascha Ring, whose new album, The Devil’s Walk, I spotted recently on Beatport during a quick browse.  ‘Ladies’ is a real stand out track from the album and has loads of drive, a fantastically atmospheric melody and some great chord sequences that draws you into the track effortlessly.  I only thought to myself last week that it would make a good intro to this episode and, low and behold, it did.  Rather than pitch it down at all, I thought I’d leave it in at around 132 bpm and allow it to dictate the early pace.

Following that is a nice selection of housier and then more chilled, progressive strains, including Daiquri’s ‘Illusion’, which sounds for all the world like Eric Prydz must have moved to Vilnius (link in case you don’t know where that is!) and changed his name and a lovely sundrenched remix by Sunn Jellie of Shingo Nakamura’s ‘Sapporo’, incidentally the city where David Beckham famously slammed home a penalty against the Argies in World Cup 2002.

Gareth Emery has cooked up another club battleship, this time in conjunction with the remarkably consistent (and possibly Emery copy cat…..?!) Ashley Wallbridge, in the form of ‘Mansion’ and ‘Timezone’ by SVD won your vote for the Room 1ne Sessions ‘People’s Choice’ of Episode 39.

But it is the album’s I’ve purchased in the last month that I want to focus on and it’s Betsie Larkin’s ‘All We Have is Now‘ which I’ll mention first.  This is a vocalist who blew us all away with ‘Made of Love’ a couple of years ago and she’s back with her first full artist album, offering her vocals to collaborations with a handful of the finest trance and progressive producers on the scene at the moment.  I’d say it’s well worth a pick up but perhaps ‘Let It Shine’ with Bjorn Akesson and ‘Toys’ with the irrepressible Giuseppe Ottaviani are the stand out tracks, the first of which I liked so much I had to make it the Room 1ne Sessions Track of the Month.

Another other album to mention is actually a compilation rather than an artist album and it’s the wonderfully indulgent ‘Enhanced 100‘, celebrating 100 releases on the newly crowned (in my eyes) King of trance music labels (Anjunabeats…keep up and remember your roots!).  Daniel Kandi & Phillip Alpha’s remix of one of my all time favourite trance tracks, Temple One’s ‘World Beyond’, is the trophy I chose to take out of the cabinet but the truth is the compilation is laden with classic releases and some belting new remixes and, even if you maybe feel that by the end of a full listen you’re a little bored of trance (is that possible?) , you can’t help but enjoy the huge melodies and fantastically dirty and thought-curtailing basslines that the label’s main names (e.g. Juventa and Daniel Kandi) offer up time and time again.

Last but not least, if any of you rejoice, as I do, when you hear a new trance track that fits the traditional uplifting and euphoric mould, then I especially recommend this last album.  ‘Yerevan‘ from SoundLift is a 10 track trance tirade from Portuguese trance pioneer Pedro Miguel Marques Azevedo Martins, otherwise known as SoundLift.  ‘One Day’ pretty much sums up what his productions have been all about over the last couple of years in particular and, whilst the album includes a bit of chillout and progressive, the main statement is clearly ‘euphoric trance will never die!’  Good on ya, Pedro, good on ya.  As an album, you’ll certainly hear more diverse than this but I imagine few will draw a smile in the same way.  Great stuff and a great track with which to end the show!

Amongst these album tracks are a selection of other beauties, including a mighty, mighty Room 1ne Classic and a great vocal from Cassandra Fox of Rui da Silva’s ‘Touch Me’ fame on a track called ‘The One’ by Ben Nicky remixed by, yes, you’ve guessed it, Daniel Kandi.

But the bottom line is, as always, I really hope you enjoy listening to this episode!

Hello All and a very happy September to you!

I’m off to Mallorca in the small hours so but I desperately wanted to get this posted for you all before I leave (and not least so I can smash out some great music on the beach!).

Yes, you’ve spotted it, it’s one of the much famed 2-parter episodes, showcasing the very best in dance music from August 2011.

I find shorter mixes mean you can actually enjoy the progression of a mix and listen to it in one go, therefore enjoying it as more than just a selection of individual tracks.  ‘Part a’ is geared much more towards a journey through deep and melodic riffs, housey beats and massive electro riffs whilst ‘Part b’ is an opportunity to change up through the gears of tech-driven to pounding euphoric trance music.  Both, I feel, are a great listen in themselves and great for a gym session, boring hour at work or some such similar event that needs a stimulus.  Even a good solid chill out at home is conducive to dropping either of these 2 bombs!

Hi All,

Apologies for the lack of a blog until now.  I just wanted to get the episode up as quickly as possible last weekend and really couldn’t be arsed to write anything!

I was about to begin making comparisons between Room 1ne episodes and high speed trains but then I realised I don’t know enough about trains to do that accurately.  So, instead, it suffices to say that Episode 37 is one of those ‘hit the ground running’ episodes that I put together from time to time.  I would say that it was planned but for the fact that it wasn’t and it was purely that the high quality trance and progressive that was released during the month of July was much more plentiful than any similar quality house music.  Not to say that there aren’t also a few housey gems here to enjoy for those of you who are more that way inclined but you’ll certainly notice things jump up a notch pretty early on this month.

So what to look out for?  As always, it’s tempting to list everything, however, there are a few stand out tracks to which I think I should draw your attention.  Firstly, thanks to everyone who voted for their favourite track from Episode 36.  The Room 1ne People’s Choice was (with a bit of guidance from me) the fantastic vocal of Bertie Blackman and the wonderfully atmospheric yet groove-driven Steve May remix of her track, ‘Sky is Falling’.  From the house selection, I have to choose Thomas Gold’s remix of Adele’s ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ as a track to mention, purely as I never thought I’d consider an Adele track for Room 1ne and perhaps equally as the key to the inclusion is less the remix and more the original track!  Great stuff though and is one of a few stunning vocals in this show.  Ralphie B, aka First State and Midway, has been featured previously in Room 1ne under his aforementioned guises but he’s not released a track under this alias for what seems like a lifetime and it’s a barnstorming return for him with his remix of Armin’s & BT’s ‘These Silent Hearts’ which, as an oversight from Episode 36, had to get a look in in Episode 37 as it’s very much a journey through a few quite different vibes in a single track and an immense journey at that.  Temple One’s remix of ‘Jacinta’s Voyage‘ by ex-Royal Air Force Officer Avatar One (don’t believe me? – http://www.avatarone.com/about.html) has a wonderfully euphoric and very old school trance tinge which takes me back to the early 00s trance glory years.  What a track guys, seriously, WHAT a track.  I think I may even email him and Joe Garrett (Temple One) him and tell them actually.  But then you may well ask, “Why, Ben, is this not then the Room 1ne Track of the Month if you speak so highly of it?”  I’ll tell you shall I?  Because Hungarian trance producer Peter Bodnar or ‘Peet B’ has conjured up a moment of brilliance from relative obscurity with his, and there is no other way to describe this track, truly mood-lifting trance bomb that possesses the sort of melody that forces you to hold back a tear of joy with every listen…or at least it forces me to anyway!  Pure genius and a great way to lead into the Room 1ne Classic.  And a true classic it is in the form of what is perhaps Gabriel and Dresden’s finest work (and that is saying something – perhaps a little controversial but I’ve gone there), their remix of Sarah Mclachlan’s haunting ‘Fallen‘.

Anyway, enough from me but that, quite frankly, is how I feel.  I think it’s a pretty good selection so you must like this episode or I will be deeply, deeply hurt.

Firstly, may I wish you all a very firm Sunday morning.

Secondly, may I extend to you the latest in the Room 1ne series, episode 36.

An atmospheric, deep and ultimately uplifting show, I’ve created a moody little bugger.  I’m hoping the format of this particular episode will perhaps earmark it as a bit of a standout, particularly as it’s book ended by a couple of brilliant chilled tracks that, for me, always give a mix a little bit more presence and overall identity.  Don’t know what I’m talking about?  Well listen to it then.

The first hour is much more of a procession of deep, downtempo beats than is perhaps the norm for Room 1ne.  There’s so much to love about the deeper end of the spectrum of electronic dance music and I’ve tried to encapsulate some melodic prog, deep house and a touch of electro into what is much more than just a warm up for the second hour.  Look out for Parker & Hanson’s ‘Arabesque’, recently featured in Above and Beyond’s Radio 1 Essential Mix, and Sydney Blu & Jquintel’s ‘The Lockout’ as a lovely juxtaposition of beautiful melody and devastating bass.

The second hour is, as always, a showcase of the very best trance music around at the moment.  I’ve focused purely on distinctive melodies for this episode and it makes for a truly uplifting hour of power!  Aside from the mighty Room 1ne Track of the Month for June, Above & Beyond’s ‘Thing Called Love’ featuring Richard Bedford, keep an ear out for Niagara by Ferrin & Morris & Sequentia (too many ‘&’s?), a real ‘tour de force’ from Will Holland’s Enhanced Recordings stable, a label that has most certainly been due a return to form.

Anyway, to the music.  I really hope you enjoy episode 36.  It’s a belter!

Apologies that this has taken such a long time to put together!  A couple of you have been asking after the show which, I guess, is a sign that the new monthly format is working and bringing a bit more regularity but with it, expectations.  I’ll make sure we’re back on schedule with episode 36 and, in fact, you’ll have more or less back to back episodes as it’ll be coming very soon!

It’d be great to see you guys if you can possibly make it.  I’m playing a housey/proggy set (as is the theme of the evening) from 9pm – 10pm and entry is completely free so there’s no excuse! (horribly overused and often inaccurate phrase but it certainly means there’s one less excuse)

Well here is the month that was March 2011.  All I’m gonna say is this is one of the finest episodes music-wise that I’ve put together for a while.  Absolutely…loved…it!

There’s the usual proggy stuff to get things going but the second half of the show is what Room 1ne is all about – big melodies and plenty of energy.  I really hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did putting it together (cliched but true…although I suppose aren’t all cliches).

Happy New Year!

A new year, a new format.  I’ve decided, largely as it stops me buying tracks just to pad out episodes but also as I think it enhances the quality of each episode, to put together an episode covering each month of 2011.  I’m hoping this will still be frequent enough for people and each show should, hopefully, be even more worth the wait.  2011 will also see me endeavour to pull up the quality of the recordings.  Bear with me as it might take me a while to get my head around the technology but, fingers crossed, you’ll be able to hammer out Room 1ne in all its high end frequency glory from now on!

I’m very happy with the tracklist for January’s episode (31).  I really wanted to start off with an intro track and I found this gem ‘The Last Message’ from Danny Boyle’s hugely under-appreciated film, ‘Sunshine’.  To go with the usual prog and trance, I also wanted to factor in some dirty electro house as it’s been a while since I really got my teeth into some.  I reckon the three tracks in this episode, particularly Miles Dyson’s ‘I-Tune’, will get you punching the air in the gym or, at the very list, biting your lip on a packed train (we’ve all done it!).  Look out also for my favourite track of this episode, Edu & Cramp’s ‘Silver Sand’ as well as Lange’s new barnstomer, ‘Fireworks’, feat. the unmistakable vocal of Emma Hewitt of ‘Let It All Out’ fame.  There’s also plenty of big trance and Daniel Kandi’s first release on his new label, Always Alive, is one to look out for as is Aneym’s beautiful vocal in ‘Nobody Knows’.  The classic came to me on a bit of a whim this time out, as they tend to do actually, and for all it’s clubbing and airplay memories, I had to finish on a banging note with Mac Zimms doing what he used to do best on the remix of Drax & Scott Mac’s ‘Must Have Been a Dream’.

Well, what can I say?  This is 2010, Room 1ne Style!  That sounds like some sort of crap tagline but in fact there is sense behind it.  So many radio shows and, in particular, year mixes or ‘best of’ shows include the really obvious choices and I really had to resist the urge to just throw in what I felt was a general representation of what’s been big this year.

This isn’t to say that certain tracks that have been left out were not worthy of a place, more that I think we’d all be deprived a chance to hear some of the better tracks of 2010 again if I followed the strict formula of ‘most radio plays = inclusion in the year mix.’

Anyway, it’s been a fantastic year for dance music this year, genuinely.  It’s been awesome to get Room 1ne back up and running with a real vengeance this year and it has been hugely facilitated by the fact that the EDM (‘electronic dance music’ for those who have or have had lives away from internet forums) world has been saturated with some incredible house, progressive and trance music this year.  The new, more down-tempo electro trance sound continues to, somewhat parasitically, encroach onto the scene but, unlike a parasite, brings an awful lot to the table, if only its illumination of the fact that we must never lose the euphoric and banging side of trance music.  Thank heavens, therefore, for the likes of Suncatcher, Temple One, Aly & Fila, Ferry Tayle, Activa, Jorn van Deynhoven, Daniel Kandi, Vast Vision, Einar K and Giuseppe Ottaviani, to name a few, who continue to fly the trance flag as it should be flown.

The scene in general though continues to have great diversity and, as long as the trance ecosystem can stay as biodiverse as it currently is, I think the musical environment is looking pretty prosperous.  Throwing in the odd hint of electro house and deep progressive keeps one honest and there is, indeed, an awful lot to be said for spending hours scouring the web for new tracks, even if in sometimes unusual (but all legal!) places, in order to find hidden gems off the beaten track.

Room 1ne, essentially, is a trance show and the 2010 year mix represents this I think.  However, I will continue to endeavour to keep the scope for inclusion as wide as possible as, fundamentally, people should be free to make their own choices regarding what they like and, particularly as I feel some of you marvelous listeners may not profess a love for progressive or trance as a first choice (house maybe more so), if I can facilitate more awareness and choice then I will!

Enough of this.  I have absolutely loved putting together this 4 hour year mix and the content is stunning.  I’ve really tried to include big tracks as much as possible with a real absence of any fillers (as there just would never have been enough time otherwise) so hopefully you’ll come out of this weak-kneed!

Thanks again to everyone who posted their requests for this show.  It was great reading all of the feedback and talking trance with some of you so let’s continue to do that.  Feedback is always welcome even if it’s about what I could do better.

Hi guys,

May I extend the very firmest of welcomes to this, episode 30 of Room 1ne Sessions.

What a year for dance music and Room 1ne 2010 has been!  I can’t believe I’ve managed 16 episodes and a guest mix in that time but, more importantly, that says a hell of a lot for the quality of what’s been out this year.

It’s fitting, therefore, that this episode should be one of the finest of the year to help 2010 leave its musical mark.   I’ve showcased 2 new albums, ‘Temporarity’ and ‘4×4 = 12′, both of which have had me bouncing along the streets during my recent half marathon training and both of which I throughly recommend purchasing.  I’ve picked out some tasty electro and prog to serve with a hearty slice of trance, garnished with a beautiful Room 1ne Classic and I think it’s all contributed to the perfect merry musical meal.  Who needs turkey?

Well I don’t believe it.  How can I be this generous?  Quite easily actually.  9 years ago I learned how to use turntables.  5 years ago I learned how to use CD decks.  During that time mp3s became the norm and I used my internet savvy to buy and download them.  Combine the two.  Simple.

So much great music around at the moment.  In fact I feel we’ve been pretty lucky in 2010.  Episode a will showcase the finest downtempo prog, electro and prog trance doing the rounds at the moment.  may I draw your attention particularly to Ferry’s remix of Faithless and the awesome new Amurai track.  I should also make mention of Matt Darey’s Nocturnal podcast if you’re particularly feeling the first few tracks.

Episode b is very much a product of the good old formula…LET’S SMASH IT.  Big melodies and plenty of drive.  Stand outs include JVD & Manuel le Saux’s devestating collaboration and the mighty Temple One’s remix of Atlantis.

It was screaming out for a Room 1ne classics episode seeing as it’s the 25th episode so what did I do?  Not a classics episode.

You will want for nothing over the next 1 hour 45 minutes however, I am confident of that.  With one or two tracks finally getting a release, namely ‘Lovers Lane’, and another couple that have stormed their way into my favourites list for this year, in particular Ferry Tayle’s mix of ‘Over & Over’ which is about as pure a trance track as you’ll hear, I would highly recommend you get this on your iPods and take it away to sunnier climes!

Almost as soon as the dust had settled from the musical stampede of the two-headed monster of Episode 22, its big brother kicks up an even greater storm!

Or so I’d like to believe.  I can’t keep saying ‘this episode is even better than the last’ but it sure as hell feels like it in the heat of putting each one together, such fun is it and so healthy is the current EDM scene!

I had a similar volume of good music this time round but felt it would work better as a 2 hour mix than as another 2-parter so there you have it.  Summery melodic progressive, a subtle hint of tech, hands-in-the-air euphoria and some good old-fashioned BOSH towards the end as well.  This is, unmistakably, my kind of music.

Good aft.

May I extend my warmest thanks to all for listening as always.  This two part episode has certainly been about as much fun as any to put together, largely ‘cos the music is absolutely top banana!  I often find a dud track in a show when I listen back to it but I can safely say there are none in this episode I could’ve left out.

Part A gives you a more progressive feel with a deep and melodic start, a chunky middle section and punishing final 3 or 4 tracks.

Part B is simply no nonsense.

Well hello once more all you avid co-residents of Room 1ne.  If only such demand could be bestowed upon the room after which the show was named, old Roy Dalby, landlord and sufferer of nose bleeds (unrealted to anything and everything), could charge a fortune.  Alas, tis the real world we live in.

I did at first consider compiling a ‘best of’ section to this episode, in which representation would be given the best track from each episode from 10 to 19, in chronological order.  I thought, ‘what fun it will be to try and mix, say,  Steve Angello with, say, Sunny Lax.’  Neither of those would necessarily have had their tracks chosen as the best in their respective weeks, although they were in adjacent shows, but you get the point.  And yet I decided, no.  For what would it have said about my expectations of the show had I celebrated such a measly milestone?  Too little, I feared.  I have many more voyages planned for this particular musical ship.

Thus, you have another 100 minutes of contemporary genius to enjoy.  An episode, I admit, which at one stage had looked like the rackety court jester in the courtyard of the euphonius King then, after much consideration, dispensed with historically-specific similies of grandeur and emerged as a cacophonous Overlord of sound.  I am, it must be said, excited for you.

I shall say no more now than that you should all enjoy this episode for yourself with no preconceptions born out of my commentary.  Comments are always welcome on the facebook page or, indeed, on this site and I would be very interested to hear your untainted take on some of the belters I’ve lined up for you all in this episode.

G’day!

Room 1ne Sessions is back for its 19th episode, unaffected by volcanic dust.  In fact, what better way to provide a rest for your ears from the constant whining of people interviewed by the media who were stuck abroad for an extra day or so.  My heart bleeds for you.

This episode takes a step back from episode 18’s more poundig vibe to try and incorporate a more summery, progressive sound.  Who better then Paul Keeley to provide some of that refreshing, melodic flavour first-up with ‘Disco Belle’ a fantastic track and my pick of the Anjunadeep 02 compilationreleased a couple of moths ago.  Jaytech has been around for a few years now and has firmly cemented himself as widely respected producer but I was never entirely taken with everything he created.  Seeing him play at Ministry and completely blow Above & Beyond away a couple of weeks ago, not usually an easy thing to do, has somewhat changed my mind about his stuff and I had to include ‘Ozone’, incidentally another stand-out track from Anjunadeep 02.

A quick shift up a gear sees Aurosonic do another number on one of Matt Darey’s Urban Astronauts tracks, ‘Black Flowers’, in what is becoming a more than effective combination and is now in danger of having to appear on every release henceforth!  ‘Safe’ from Velvetine, aka Myon & Shane 54, is a track that’s been big since it’s inclusion in Anjunabeats Vol. 7 last autumn and has done the rounds but I thought it was time to include the original in an episode, particularly after its apparent disappearance in light of the also excellent Rank 1 mix.  Never forget a good original I say.  Sasha Virus debut’s on Room 1ne comes on the remix of Andy Tau’s ‘Static’ and is a big favourite of mine at the moment as is the new one from the Blizzard, this time in association with Omnia, who provide a long awaited remedy for those of us who have fallen for their bouncy and melodic sound that has worked so well in the past.

Then it’s trance time and before I even realised it I was smashing it with Sebastien Brandt’s stunningly deep yet powerful 2010 remix of Signum’s reworked classic, ‘First Strike’.  The back story to this is that Menno de Jong used it to single-handedly render the entire main room at Sankey’s as close to a trance mosh pit as you could imagine without it ever actually excisting (please god no!).  Sebastian Brandt then follows up a remix with his own production, the theme for Armin’s ASOT 450 special which, unsurprisingly, is called ‘450’.  Perhaps my favurite track of the show is Temple One’s (Joe Garrett) spine-tingling remix of ‘Offshore’ by Tim Priejers under his Sense of Shiver guize feat. Boom and we finish with two tracks in a row from my favourite producer of the last few months, Suncatcher.  Spring Break in particular, I hope, finds you driving with the window down and the sun out, chilling in your garden or on holiday on the beach as this, for me, is tantamount to the clocks going forward.

Anyway, listen, enjoy, wear loose fitting clothes and never make the mistake of wearing a single shirt to work in hot weather when you’re ‘a sweater’.

Hi guys,

Thanks for heading back for another session.

There’s a ridiculous wealth of good trance around at the moment, defying the ongoing electro and prog pandemic. It’s not that I don’t like that stuff of course but it’s so encouraging to see the likes of Mike Nichol, Ferry Tayle and Dale Corderoy (just to name a few that are actually featured in this episode) keeping trance’s head above water.

That said I have of course tried to keep the spectrum broad, as ever, but I’ve also looked to kick it up a notch this episode, I think with pretty good results!

I’m too tired to be wordy this time so I’ll let the music talk to you instead.  I hope you all enjoy episode 18 as much as I enjoyed putting it together!  God it’s fun.

Good day Room 1ne inhabitants!

It is my distinct pleasure to introduce yet another episode of the critically acclaimed Room 1ne Sessions.  Coinciding as it has with the weather’s decision to take a turn for the better, I’ve strung together 16 of my favourite tracks, several of which dare to suggest that the seemingly endless days of snow and cold are finally behind us!

Keep an ear out for the beautifully warm ‘Nadia’ by Shogun featuring the excellent vocals of Hannah Ray, a track that surely will be as symbolic of this year’s late-summer festivals as it is of the end of last winter.  Stoneface & Terminal’s status as a permanent Room 1ne fixture continues, albeit along slightly less trancey lines, with the inclusion of the candidly titled and unmistakable ‘Don’t Give a F**k’.  Another standout track for me is Mike Shiver’s remix of Marcus Schossow & Andy Duguid’s ‘Light’, an original that works but was in need of a remix to give it a wider appeal.  The inimitable Swede has certainly given it just that.  And Enhanced have teed up another great release in the form of Oliver P’s (previously of Fast Distance) ‘Lost Without You’/’Philadelphia’ EP, both tracks being worth a mention but the latter getting the nod here.  But perhaps my favourite track of the show, and indeed of the last 6 months, is the stunning ‘Sandwriting’ by Vast Vision and RAM.  I remember hearing this on the train back from Scotland last year on a sunny August morning whilst looking out over the North Sea.  You’re going to have to excuse me for waxing lyrical about this one as it’s one of those ‘when was the first time you heard it?’ moments I won’t be forgetting!

Make of the tracks what you will but the bottom line is I hope you guys enjoy what was a very enjoyable episode to put together!

I am flattered and delighted to announce that my friends Phil and Kiz have been good enough to invite me to put together a one hour mix for their blissfully refreshing radio show, Showdown Sessions.

It’s a 2 hour show and my one hour mix will be following a banging mix for the first hour from Showdown themselves. 

I’ve known the guys for a while and there are few who share a greater passion, commitment and intellect for the music we love.  Their show and DJ careers have been going from strength to strength over the 35 episodes of Showdown Sessions they have amassed and, thus, I thoroughly recommend you tune in for the full 2 hours!

Episode 16 (13th Feb 2010) Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

Happy days! I’ve just finished yet another episode of the now musical institution that is Room 1ne Sessions. This is indeed the first episode with both the numbers 1 and 6 in. It’s bound to be good in that case as I think those are widely regarded as the best numbers.

Well, what can I say this about this offering other than it’s probably one of my favourite shows I’ve ever put together, particularly as I feel for the first time in a long time I’ve managed to capture the full spectrum of what I love and that is, of course, the aim! There’s nothing more enjoyable than an evening set aside for what I call the ‘house foray’, i.e. a frantic search for house music to balance the trance and progressive that naturally diffuses into my iTunes between episodes. To stick with the biological comparison, I certainly aquire my house music more via active transport.

So what should I suggest you, the keen listener, look out for this time round? A good question for sure. The opening ‘Haciendo Musica’ is clearly a highlight as it captures a balearic mood I seldom embrace that gives hope to those of us suffering from Februaryitis and, having enlisted the services of David Jones, provides plenty of bounce to kick things off. I struggled between the original and Ryan Mullins mixes of Shiloh’s (who I’ve featured a fair bit in the much older episodes) ‘Run Away’. Basically both are ace and I strongly recommend the former as well, it was just a little deep for this show on reflection. Following that is the fantasticly mesmeric Heyaah from two legends, Dave Seaman and Josh Gabriel, a track I managed to overlook from last autumn and decided had to get a spot. I defy you not to have that ‘Hey, hey, heyaah, heyaah’ going round in your head after listening to it a few times! And Solarity have finally produced an Anjunadeep track that sits properly with me, the bassline in ‘Diophantine’ being something to behold. Keep your ears pinned…

…I’m more or less mentioning everything aren’t I?!…

…The original mix of Crayons & Peder G’s ‘There you go’ captures that Michael Cassette feel you may know from earlier shows and I felt it deserved an equal footing through exposure here in the face of the general success of the Crayons remix. Then we get serious, Leah and Jonathan Mendelsohn providing epic vocals on ‘You can have it all’ and ‘Coming back’ respectively, the latter perhaps taking the mantle of my tune of the moment right now courtesy of Nic Chagall’s ‘This moment’-esque (for those who know it) treatment. M.I.K.E. (also known as ‘Push’ and in this case ‘Plastic Boy’) is back to his best after floundering in trance limbo for a while with the euphoric yet suprisingly chunky ‘Chocolate infusion’, the drop in which is something very special indeed! Stoneface & Terminal must be in as many of my shows as possible and they provide comfortably the best remix of a very large package of ‘Out of the blue’ updates and the massive melodies continue to play us out for the final 4 tracks, Suncatcher’s ‘Wildflowers’ and Cold Blue’s Anjunabeats Vol. 7-ender ‘Downhill’ providing perhaps the spiciest meatballs of the trance tagliatelle.

Bottom line, I’ve tried to get in something for everyone and I hope it works for you!

Happy new year everyone!

First let me apologise that another 6 weeks or so should pass without another episode of Room 1ne Sessions materialising.  You will hopefully be, as I was, ecastatic to learn that I have now found a technical fix to the problems I was having which were limiting the show to just 45 minutes and so it’s back to the old ways of longer shows with more music!  This really can only be a good thing.

And episode 15 is a bit of a ripper if I do say so myself.  Opening with the fantastic Chimera from Ashley Wallbridge, whose electro sound continues to diffuse into the record boxes of trance DJs, I’ve tried to create a set I might play in a club, steering away from experimental tracks in favour of basslines, big kicks, breakdowns and melodies.  Particularly worth a mention are Dash Berlin’s ‘Never cry again’, yet another example of the man’s ability to make vocals work to stunning effect, the brilliantly euphoric yet slightly deeper and darker Adymus remix of Eide & Andrez’s ‘Forget me’ and of course Mike Shiver & Matias Lehtola’s ‘Nana’, the sort of track that pops up once or twice a year and punches you fully in the face.  The two anjunabeats tracks towards the end of the mix should come as no suprise to listeners of this show, or indeed trance-lovers in general, as Anjunabeats continues to prove that it has a certain something that you seldom find from any other label.  Answers on a postcard if you know what that is.  Thierry Henry will likely know (if you get that reference I’ll be impressed).

I was rooting around in my wardrobe the other day and I found my prog trousers.  Being something I hadn’t worn in a while, I decided to stick ’em on and low and behold this head-noddingly groovy mix materialised!

I felt the last few episodes, shorter as they now are, had erred much more towards the banging stuff and thus I decided that, in addition to the fact there is some very cool house and prog around at the moment, I would give the deeper stuff a chance to do the talking for episode 14.  And I very much like what it has had to say!

Look out for the new Steve Angello track which grows on me with every listen chunky and brilliant in its simplicity, the bouncy and brilliant Mazanga, the beautiful See the Sun (a favourite almost universally at the moment) and, my personal favourite of the show, Beat Service’s Perry O’Neil-esque (if anyone remembers him from the old-school Anjunabeats B-sides amonst other places) Back of Beyond.  I thought to finish the mix on a more mysterious and trippy progressive number was something of a masterstroke and it was inspired by the legendary Mixmag cover-mount CD by Above & Beyond, ‘laser-kissed trance’, which sported the deep yet intense drum-mastery of Roland Klinkenberg’s Monday Groove (youtube it if you’ve not heard it it’s well worth a listen).

Anyway, now I’ve satisfied the blogger in me just crack on with the podcast!  I dunno how you all will prefer to listen to a mix of this vibe but I would suggest getting in an armchair, grabbing a lager beer (or similar), lowering the lights and cranking it up!  Relaxing yet electrifying.
